Lovers choice

I love roses but we have lots of mature trees so most parts of the garden are shaded. This year I decided there was one sunny corner previously a compost heap (aka weed heap) where I think they might thrive so I have planted some and we'll see.

Reflection:
Song of Solomon 2:1-2 (New International Version)
Beloved: I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.
Lover: Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the maidens.

  1. This post should probably have been called "Photographers Choice" ... after all how many photos of roses with dew drops have you seen? But I settled for the "Lovers Choice" because the only Bible verse I could think of referring to a rose was the one in the Song of Solomon. There are other roses in the Bible, "Rose from his bed" or "Rose from the dead" etc but they don't count. Let's ignore the footnote that says the Rose of Sharon was possibly a member of the crocus family and not a real rose at all.

  2. I know this does not come from your book of choice, but it is profoundly wistful about the ravages that time etches into the clarity of love:

All things uncomely and broken, all things worn out and old,
The cry of a child by the roadway, the creak of a lumbering cart,
The heavy steps of the ploughman, splashing the wintry mould,
Are wronging your image that blossoms a rose in the deeps of my heart.
    ... WBY ...
